Why Mobile Substations Matter More Than Ever

Mobile substations have become essential assets in today’s strained energy landscape. But it’s not just about having a mobile substation ready, it’s about having one built your way, for your real-world deployment needs. From site-specific applications to system compatibility, Jordan Transformer delivers mobile substations engineered to perform under demand.

  • Backlog crisis at U.S. suppliers is forcing utilities to wait years.

  • Preconstruction and new construction planning are essential as the grid strains under renewable growth, rising loads, and aging infrastructure.

  • Broadening applications of Mobile substations give you interim capacity, emergency support, and expansion flexibility.

  • Limited number of suppliers risks outages, lost capacity, and higher costs.

Purpose-Built or Refurbished, Your Way

Jordan Transformer mobile substations are newly engineered builds. Each one is designed from the ground up using industry-standard protection components, customer specifications, and field-proven design practices. But when a new build isn’t the right fit, we also offer remanufacture options that deliver the same high standards at even shorter lead times.

We manage the entire process from design to parts sourcing, fabrication, and testing. This gives you full transparency, tighter quality control, and performance you can trust in real-world conditions.

Built and Tested for Growing Grid Demands

Each Jordan mobile substation is engineered for actual utility conditions: forces, thermal extremes, space constraints and electrical ratings. We design for the realities your equipment will experience. Every unit undergoes rigorous design and testing to meet IEEE C57.12 standards and utility specs before delivery.

That means proven performance under load per IEEE C57.12 for decades of service. You're not getting a prototype. You're getting a substation that's ready to work for decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a mobile substation and a mobile transformer?
A mobile substation is a fully integrated power system that includes a transformer, switchgear, control equipment, and protective relays, all mounted on a trailer or skid for easy transport. It is designed to serve as a temporary replacement for a full substation during emergencies, upgrades, or planned outages. A mobile transformer, by comparison, refers only to the transformer itself. It does not include the switchgear or controls and must be combined with additional components to function as part of a complete power system. Mobile substations are turnkey solutions, while mobile transformers are a single element of a larger setup.
What is the warranty coverage for Jordan Transformer mobile substations?
Jordan Transformer offers a five-year warranty on its mobile substations. This coverage reflects the company’s commitment to long-term reliability and customer support. The warranty includes both the transformer and the integrated components, providing peace of mind for utilities and operators managing high-demand or emergency deployments. Because each unit is built or remanufactured with strict quality assurance and domestic oversight, Jordan stands behind its products with confidence. The five-year warranty helps ensure ongoing performance and minimizes the risk of unexpected repair costs. Customers can contact Jordan Transformer directly for details about specific coverage terms or to initiate a support request.

Are leasing options available?
Yes, leasing options are available for Jordan Transformer mobile substations. Leasing can be a strategic solution for utilities facing temporary capacity needs, emergency outages, or long-term infrastructure projects. It allows you to secure critical power equipment without the upfront capital investment of a full purchase. Jordan Transformer works directly with each customer to structure leasing agreements that fit their operational timelines and budget. Whether you need a unit for a few months or several years, flexible terms are available to match your project scope. Contact the Jordan team to discuss current availability and explore the best leasing option for your needs.
What are the expected freight/transport costs?
For remanufactured units, customers are responsible for transporting their transformer to and from Jordan Transformer’s facility. The team handles everything in between, delivering a fully rebuilt unit that meets the highest quality standards. For new builds, customers purchase the necessary materials upfront, and Jordan constructs the unit to exact specifications. Once completed, the unit is available for pickup at the facility. In both cases, the process is transparent, collaborative, and designed to keep you informed from start to finish. Jordan’s team is always available to help coordinate logistics and ensure a smooth, efficient experience tailored to your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between mobile substation and mobile transformer?

Mobile substations provide a fully functional, temporary substation solution, whereas mobile (portable) transformers are just one component of that substation solution.

A mobile (portable) transformer is a single transformer able to be loaded on a truck used to replace a damaged or offline transformer in a substation.

While a mobile substation is a complete, transportable electrical substation, typically on an 18-wheel trailer, containing a power transformer with cooling capability plus other necessary substation equipment like switchgear,  circuit breakers and extensive controls.

Feature

Mobile Transformer

Mobile Substation

Definition

A single electrical transformer unit that is designed to be easily moved and installed in an existing substation.

A complete, transportable electrical substation built on a mobile platform, typically an 18-wheel semi-trailer.

Components

Just the transformer itself.

A power transformer plus other key substation components like switchgear, circuit breakers, isolators, and control panels.

Function

Replaces a traditional, fixed transformer for emergencies.

Provides a temporary, fully functional power substation source for a specific location and specific power and voltage ratings.

Use Case

To temporarily replace a single broken or offline transformer in a permanent substation (aka spare portable transformer).

To provide temporary power during a permanent substation's maintenance, or for construction projects, and disaster relief.

Complexity

A single component.

A complex, integrated substation system.

Are there leasing options for a mobile substation?

Jordan Transformer does not lease mobile substations. We build new or remanufacture existing utility mobile substations back to original OEM specifications.

Leasing Options and Agreements from Field Service organizations, such as Siemens, are typically for short-term rentals and are ideal for emergency power restoration or planned maintenance periods.

How long is the warranty for mobile substations?

Warranty for new mobile substations are typically 5 years from delivery. A significant impact on warranty is the maintenance of the mobile substations from being idle or transported for long distances. Mobile substations are designed to be local short hauls applications only.

Remanufactured mobile substations will have a reduced and itemized warranty, commonly less than 2 years (12/18 months), based upon the reuse versus replacement of key components such as transformer accessories, switch gear components, controls, and trailer.
